Today we’d like to introduce you to In Solid Air. They and their team shared their story with us below:
All four of us (Donovan, Ryan, Scott, and Ethan) met at Concordia University, Saint Paul. In the later half of college, we would get together and jam, sometimes along to a drum track on YouTube or we’d move equipment into the Pearson Theatre on campus and spend several hours through the night playing music.
We had talked about forming a band several times but due to the business of school, nothing solidified. After Ryan and Ethan graduated and Donnie and Scott became part-time students, we realized we missed playing music together and decided to get something going. We started rehearsing in the fall of 2022 and have two albums worth of material we are working on recording.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggles we have faced have been our inability to rehearse as often as we would like to because we all have full-time day jobs. Therefore, our schedules are all full. Gigs are also incredibly difficult to find because a lot of venues prefer to bring in bands with a bigger following.
Since we are a group starting from scratch and don’t have an agent or manager, we don’t have much of an audience to start with. Our bassist, Ethan has also moved to Indiana for school which means we can’t rehearse, play shows, or record for the time being. The remaining three members, Ryan, Donovan, and Scott, will try to find a way to continue in his absence.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
We are four close friends who have spent the past half-year playing and writing music. Generally speaking, we play in the genre of psychedelic rock and are also influenced by genres such as space rock, progressive rock, hard rock, metal, folk, jazz, and avante-garde. We all met in college at Concordia University, Saint Paul, where we were in choir together.
Some of us were in other music ensembles in college, and each have our solo projects as well. We were all known for being musically inclined individuals at school and our contributions to music were regarded as unique and interesting. Our music is very individualistic and we enjoy bringing each of our influences into the group sound. Music is more than just an art for us, it’s a very personal and intimate thing.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
Personal chemistry, authentically expressing yourself through your art.
