Rising Stars: Meet Indecent Proposal

Today we’d like to introduce you to Indecent Proposal.

Indecent Proposal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It is difficult to tell you exactly where this group started. However, if we had to pick a point it would be when Terry walked into a restaurant to see an acoustic duo. That acoustic duo also included Jevin that was not at that particular show but would come into the picture later. After that initial performance, Terry made his introductions to the two guitarists and would later go to a number of their shows in the area. Eventually, Terry decided to approach the group with an idea to get together and jam because back in high school he had played Bass Guitar for another band.

When Terry approached the group they agreed to meet but shortly after they did get together that original group disbanded that Terry had seen perform that first night. Then one of the guitarists from that group approached Terry with the idea of forming a 90’s cover group with himself and Jevin; the original percussionist. So they all got together and learned about 30 different 90’s cover songs and were about to start doing shows when the guitarist decided that he wanted to quit.

To this day nobody knows what made him want to quit because he still doesn’t talk to any one of them, but the universe has a way of forcing certain energies on to their correct path. That’s kind of what happened to our story. Because once this happened Jevin decided he would reach out to that other half of the original acoustic duo with the idea of combining forces. So the three of us got together.

The first night we got together we wrote our first song together “In The Morning”. Then we wrote “Behind Her Eyes”, “Allbright”, “Just Tragedy”, and decided to write an upbeat rock version of Josh’s original “Feeling Good”. It was clear that we had writing chemistry and our goals were aligned to just write music that we thought was just good period. No agenda, No trying to fit into a box, no trying to stick to a genre, and especially no trying to write a song just for it to hit a million listens. We wanted to write music that simply stuck with you and that was undeniably good when it hit your eardrums. But we needed a lead guitarist to fill our sound. Little did we know that the best lead guitarist in the world would fall into our lap one day.

See, Terry was doing rideshare work one day and he got a call to pickup Peter oddly enough. Peter is our Lead Guitarist today and he is totally “Indecent”! Peter through natural selection started talking to Terry about music and the rest was history. Before Peter reached his destination that day he had Terry’s number and had an idea of when he was going to be jamming with the band. Peter jammed with us once and we were very enthused. There was much enthusiasm! Peter has been a huge addition from not only a performing and writing standpoint but also producing. Once we all realized that we had such a great opportunity in front of us we decided to put a name on it and start building this band to see where it would take us. We only get one ride on this rock, might as well make the most of it. So we introduce to you Indecent Proposal.

This is a group that just wants to bring you great music. We love writing music but we enjoy building beautiful songs that leave you with something. We don’t want to chase trends, we don’t want to be the most popular. Ironically by today’s standards, we want to be a bit “Indecent”. We don’t want to fit into any box or have anybody think that our sound is just more of the same mindless music you mostly hear these days. Let’s be Indecent. That is our “Indecent Proposal”.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One person’s obstacle is another’s chance to learn and grow. We are all complete humans with families and responsibilities. Sometimes it’s difficult to manage schedules, and we (and our families) make sacrifices so we can do what we love. As Josh puts it, “the hardest part about being in a band is being in a band.” That being said, we’re lucky we get to do what we do, and even luckier that people seem to like it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
We’re a band. We play music. Sometimes it sounds like beautiful chaos. Other times it sounds like regular chaos. At all times we’re having fun and following our muse. If anything sets us apart, it’s that we genuinely enjoy playing music together just for the music’s sake. Our success, if any, is due in part to the fact that we’re just not taking it that seriously. It’s music. Why worry?

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Be friends with as many people as you can. You never know when the rando you start talking to in the back of their pickup truck might ask you to join their band.
