Today we’d like to introduce you to Jake Perusich.
Jake, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I had always had an interest in photography since I was younger, but I began to take it seriously during college roughly 4 years ago. I was using my sister’s Nikon DSLR, until I eventually got one of my own to take pictures of the gorgeous Southwestern Montana Landscape. I kept falling more and more in love with the art of photography so even when I moved across the country to southwestern Minnesota, I made sure my cameras took the journey with me. I focus mainly on landscapes and small-town scenes all along the Des Moines River valley.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Every road has its troubles. I’ve had significant broken gear troubles as well as massive scenery changes from the Mountains of Southwest Montana to the flat plains of the midwest. I’ve continued to explore the style that makes my photography unique throughout the whole process.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in Moody landscape and small-town photography. Most photographers focus solely on the beautiful without thinking about the way we want our art’s viewers to feel. I interlace all my work with a sense of longing and nostalgia. I want my viewer to miss the day when the photo was taken regardless of if they ever have seen a similar scene with their own eyes.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Many of my childhood memories center around the mountains, but easily one of my favorites is a time my father and I hunkered down during a snowstorm in a forest service cabin. We were out hunting, but a storm had rolled in quickly. We luckily knew of a nearby cabin as we were multiple miles from our truck so we started a fire and kept warm while watching the beautiful snowfall.
