Today we’d like to introduce you to James Hollingsworth.
James, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Growing up in St. Louis, Mo wasn’t always easy. I would be in and out of college trying to figure out my purpose. It wasn’t until I found my love for cameras as I was serving in the US Navy. My friends and I would shoot photos all across Norfolk, VA where we were stationed. I’ve always had a creative mind creating music for numerous major artists so when I learned how to use a camera it came so easily to me.
Music has always been my passion but I felt it was time to learn a new skill. Moving to Minnesota after the military and learning photography has been one of the best things to ever happen for me because it has allowed me to get out of the house and network with others. Being a very introverted person, photography has become a great outlet for me and it has taught me so much about myself.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Learning how to socialize with others and breaking out of my introverted shell.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m most proud of my dedication. I was able to finally be consistent with something without quitting. I always felt the need to quit something because I wasn’t able to see quick results.
Joining the Navy at 24 years of age was the kind of opportunity I needed to help me to learn consistency. I believe my resiliency coming from where I’m from is amazing and it shows others that they can do whatever they want in life as long as they stick with it. I’d never have thought I would even be this far in life.
Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Shooting sessions at the photography studio makes me happy because it doesn’t feel like a job. I can create as I please without judgment and the clients are always happy with my work.
With 2 years into photography, it feels good when you have others with more experience admiring your work. In 2022, I’ve had some of my work used in Ads for Khols. It was a really great feeling to see results in such a small time of taking my passion seriously.
