Rising Stars: Meet Jamie Broll of A home-based business in Hutchinson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Broll.

Hi Jamie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I’ve loved to bake bread and desserts and cook since I was old enough to do things in the kitchen. During COVID, many people started baking bread or learning how to make sourdough starters, decorating cakes, etc., but for myself, I just found that slowed-down pace allowed me to reignite some of my passions. I was baking scones for my family, but as I had more time to experiment with different flavors and give them away to co-workers and friends, I felt like there was an untapped opportunity I couldn’t ignore. Our town is over 13,000 and no longer has a hometown bakery. During COVID, I would post photos of my scones. There seemed to be this bubbling demand, so I finally decided to obtain my Cottage Food Producers License and start my business Harmony Baking Company in March 2021. I primarily sell scones as they are unique and something that feels special and “fancy.” I also make various cookies but try to stay small-scale in my offerings to maintain quality, efficiency, and simplicity in my “side-hustle.” My scones are made with fresh ingredients. Many customers comment that my scones are not your typical dry, hard scone but moist and full of flavor. I’m working on building a Website to make ordering easier and exploring a monthly subscription program for local businesses.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not always. In my first year, I hustled hard and didn’t have some of my systems down, increasing my production times. I work full-time, so I baked well into the late-night baking. I’ve taken a small step back this year and am working more on the business. I moved into a new house this spring, and I now have my dream kitchen, but I’m focusing on getting settled and taking orders as they come and less on seeking out orders.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a licensed Real Estate Agent. I joined The Broll Team-Keller Williams Realty Integrity NW in 2016 as a Listings Manager. I’ve worked my way into Director of Operations in 2022. I love the problem-solving, challenge, and ability to help people accomplish their goals in real estate. I help lead our team of 11 members. We are one of our area’s largest real estate teams, and I love being a part of a high-caliber group!

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Never say never. Know your why and focus on what you’re passionate about. Keep your mind and soul open to opportunities along the way.
