Rising Stars: Meet Jennifer Lara-Amezcua of Rochester, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Lara-Amezcua.

Jennifer Lara-Amezcua

Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
From a young age, I was captivated by the art of makeup. I have vivid memories of watching my mother and aunts as they got ready, carefully applying their makeup and transforming their looks for different occasions. I admired how they enhanced their natural features and expressed their creativity, and I would often ask them to do my makeup as well. As soon as I was old enough, I began watching makeup tutorials on YouTube, immersing myself in learning new techniques and trends every day.

At 12 years old, my parents allowed me to start wearing mascara, which sparked an even deeper interest. I began saving every dollar I could, purchasing makeup from the dollar store to practice and hone my skills. When I got my first job at 14, I was able to invest in higher-quality products from the drugstore and started building a more professional makeup collection. Many late nights were spent practicing advanced techniques such as winged eyeliner, ombré eyeshadow, and cut creases, determined to improve my artistry.

Throughout high school, I began offering makeup applications for friends, whether for fun or special events like school dances. It was during this time that I realized my passion could become a career.

Eight years later, I made the decision to turn that passion into a profession. In 2023, I earned both my Advanced Practice Esthetician License and Salon Manager License. In May of 2024, I opened my own business, Evangelic Esthetics, specializing in lash extensions and waxing services. By October of that same year, I expanded my offerings to include professional makeup services—one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made. What began as a childhood fascination has grown into a thriving career, and I am incredibly proud of the journey that brought me here.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
One of my biggest challenges was attending beauty school while pregnant with my daughter. I dedicated myself fully to my education, arriving early, staying late, and attending on most optional days to complete as many hours as possible before going on maternity leave. In May of 2023, I welcomed my beautiful, healthy daughter, Evangeline, into the world. Just three months later, in August, I returned to school determined to finish what I had started. I successfully completed all my remaining hours and graduated the following month.

Balancing school and being away from my newborn was incredibly difficult, but I stayed focused on my long-term goals. I knew that by pushing through and completing my education, I was creating a better future for both myself and my daughter. Looking back, every sacrifice was worth it.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Licensed Advanced Practice Esthetician specializing in makeup application, with a particular passion for working with brides and their bridal parties. It’s an incredible honor to play a role in such an important day in someone’s life—helping them feel confident and beautiful as they create memories they will cherish forever. Knowing that my work will be part of photos and moments they’ll look back on for years to come is truly rewarding.

I am committed to continually expanding my skills and exploring new opportunities within the beauty industry. Every day, I challenge myself to learn something new and grow as an artist, allowing me to better serve my clients and connect with a wider community.
