Today we’d like to introduce you to Joylin Crosser-Olin.
Hi Joylin, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started back in 2021 making garlands for my daughter’s birthday and small garlands for friends! After some successful events I did for free, I had a few people tell me that I should look into turning into a business because they loved my work.
A good friend of mine hired me for my first event for her son’s 1st birthday and it went well. I then started practicing more and was able to book a few more birthdays during the summer and a huge gender reveal for a photographer in the twin cities that got great publicity and put my name out there even more.
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been easy. There are slow months where I don’t get any bookings or lots of inquiries but no one pulls the trigger to book. It can be pretty discouraging sometimes but it’s a part of the journey of entrepreneurship. Also, I currently work full time as a Campus Recruiter so during my busy season for work, I tend to see a pick up of inquiries and bookings.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I make balloon garlands and backdrops for all kinds of events, big or small. I try to stay out of party planning and just stick to being a balloon stylist. I am known for making beautiful backdrops for birthdays and showers.
I am most proud of a balloon hang that I was able to do for LMNTS, a store at MOA. It was a last-minute booking and the owner gave me full reign to design a small garland for their release party! She was surprised and loved the abstract look I created.
I would say, what sets me apart is my ability to be innovative and flexible for each different scenario. I try my best to work with everyone’s budget and create something beautiful that they will all love.
How do you think about luck?
Since officially starting my business in June of 2022, I would say I have had pretty good luck. During my first year in business, I was able to book over 30 paid events and saw an increase in support through word of mouth and referrals.

- Mini Bounce House and garland: $250 rental plus $100 refundable deposit
