Today we’d like to introduce you to Kailey Younggren.
Hi Kailey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
My interest in photography began at a young age. My parents bought me my first point-and-shoot camera for my 10th birthday, and I remember inviting my friends over for photoshoots so I could use it. We would go around my hometown for hours taking photos, and I fell in love with finding interesting locations, helping them feel comfortable in front of the camera, and playing with the lighting. In high school, I started to get involved with our yearbook and took many photos of the students. After graduating, I began taking senior portraits and family photos, and not too long after that, I photographed my first wedding.
Today, I mostly photograph weddings and families, but I still do take a handful of seniors! I love being a part of milestones in people’s lives.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t always been smooth. I’ve experienced a lot of self-doubt in running my own business.
Every time I thought I was ready to make the leap, I would find myself in a great job and choose to keep my photography business as a side hustle. But I don’t regret it at all. I’ve loved working for small businesses throughout the years!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I do photography and graphic design! My photography business focuses on weddings, couples, families, and seniors, while my graphic design projects are all about branding and layout design.
I’m most proud of developing my style throughout the years and love being a part of so many milestones. It’s fun to work with clients at different stages of their lives, from their senior year of high school to their wedding, and everything between and beyond! It means so much to have people trust me with capturing their biggest days.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
One of the biggest pieces of advice I can give is, to ask for help when you need it! We have an amazing community of creatives that are always willing to lend a hand or offer an opinion. I’d also say, work past the self-doubt and, even though it’s hard, try not to compare yourself to others. There are many photography styles, and you’ll bring your own eye and creativity to it!
Oh, and never stop learning! Photography is an ever-changing industry. Traveling for workshops and styled shoots is fantastic for your craft, and I have met so many friends in the industry that I wouldn’t have had the pleasure to meet otherwise.
