Hi Kayla , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started doing hair 15 years ago, I had tried full service salons and just didn’t feel like the right fit for me. I had a friend reach out to me to work at the barbershop doing men’s hair. I felt then I found my passion. I was there with that company for 13 years and gained a lot of knowledge and clients that now feel more like family. I decided to go out on my own and start Crew It Up. I needed more flexibility for my family, with 2 of my 4 kids that have disabilities, along with my kids being in sports and after school activities. The past 4 months of having my salon had been nothing but amazing! With being able to still take care of my clients and gaining new clients and also being able to be a Mom.
I love what I do and it makes me feel so good that I can have the support from all around me!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
There always comes struggle with success, I knew going out on my own I could also lose some of my clients, but a lot have followed. That hard part so just never knowing. But with the clientele that I had and the new clients that I have gained has been amazing
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in men’s/ boys hair. I can do anything from high and tight to flat tops. To your basic crew cuts. I started offering the extra long shampoo service and that seems to be a big hit! Nothing like getting a great hair cut but also getting the full relaxation of a scalp massage and hot towel to have you feeling brand new! I’m so proud of myself for taking the step to follow my dreams and having faith that I did the right thing.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I would have to say people don’t just remember you for the haircut you do but also your personality and how you can relate to them and how you make them feel. This isn’t just a job it’s a lifestyle. And be proud of yourself and your work!
