Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennedy Lor.
Kennedy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
As someone who has always been interested in both fashion and sustainability, I wanted to create a brand that is truly centered around it. My focus on sustainability has also driven me to create something new and unique as a designer.
I recently graduated from college with a degree in Apparel Design & Development, and I’m now working on my own brand, LOWKEN, which specializes in upcycling second-hand materials and fabrics into contemporary pieces. It’s been a lot of hard work, but I’m really excited about where my business is heading and I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished so far.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It was definitely a bit nerve-wracking to start my own business and not have a traditional 9-5 job right after college.
It wasn’t the path that most of my friends and family took, but I felt like it was the right choice for me. Running a small business is always a challenge, and I’m currently doing everything I can to get things off the ground. There are times when sales are slow or I don’t have any custom orders, and that’s when I have to focus on analyzing my marketing and finding ways to improve. I’ve learned that being a fashion business owner means wearing many hats, and sometimes that means putting the business side first and the creative side second. It can be a lot of work, but it’s also really rewarding.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a fashion designer, I create unisex accessories and clothing and I’m known for my big, structural knitwear pieces and custom leather goods. I’m always looking for new ways to blend these elements together in my work. I’m really proud of the business and brand I’ve built by following my passions and taking some risks in starting one. One thing that sets me apart from other designers is my focus on sustainability.
I only use secondhand and excess materials to make limited-edition or one-of-a-kind pieces, and I’m always looking for new ways to be responsible and creative in my work. This is something that’s really important to me and I’m passionate about making a difference in the fashion industry.
What matters most to you?
I’m passionate about sustainability because it aligns with my values and my vision for the future. As a young, independent designer, I believe that we’ll see a growing number of creative designers focused on sustainability in the years ahead.
There are so many areas where the fashion industry needs to improve, and I think that independent designers have the potential to make a real difference. I’m looking forward to being part of this exciting movement!
