Rising Stars: Meet Kennidy Rivet of Meraki Hair Lounge St. Paul

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kennidy Rivet.

Hi Kennidy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was younger, I knew I always wanted to do hair; I was always the go-to for prom makeup and updos. I spent a lot of middle and high school watching makeup and hair tutorials on YouTube, and I was sure that’s what I wanted to do. When it came time to apply to college, I started thinking about what others would think, and people always used to say I would never make any money doing hair, so I studied social work at St. Cloud State University. After my first semester, I was ready to drop out, so I applied to Aveda Institute Minneapolis and would be attending in June 2020; halfway through my second semester, we had to do virtual learning, and we all got sent home. I was not about this, so I dropped out right when it happened. Starting at Aveda was like a breath of fresh air; I could do what I loved every day, study my craft, and get better. I’ve worked so hard in the last two years building my clientele, learning everything, and mastering what I love to do.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
I’ve always struggled with depression and anxiety; during my time in cosmetology, I hit a wall in my mental health and didn’t want to continue. Luckily I had a great group of friends at school who always made me laugh even during the hard times and amazing clients who made me feel special. I still have my struggles today but waking up and going to do what I’m passionate about makes me stay.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a hairstylist in St. Paul, I specialize in blondes, blondes, and brunettes, but I also like to do haircuts. I’m known for creating hair that is seamless and beautiful and hair that is low maintenance, so your hair looks amazing even after 6 months of having it done. In just one year of being out of school, I could go out on my own and rent a chair.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
After just one year of being out of cosmetology school, I’ve been able to go out on my own and rent a chair; for a while, this seemed like a terrifying thing, and I wasn’t sure about it, I was nervous and scared, but I was so ready for a change. When it came to finding a salon I wanted to rent at, I only had one in mind, which is where I work now, and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. It is a risk worth taking.
