Rising Stars: Meet Kristen Perrine of Lakeville, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Perrine

Kristen, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My photography journey started when I picked up my first camera at 14, and I was instantly hooked! I fell in love with capturing the little details in nature—things most people might walk right past without noticing. A couple of years later, my sister started asking me to take photos of her family, and that’s when I realized just how much I loved photographing people too!

I took a few photography classes in high school, then went on to minor in photography in college. In 2020, my husband and I moved from Mankato to Lakeville, and I knew it was time to turn my passion into my dream job. So, in early 2021, I found incredible photography mentors, hit the ground running, and officially launched my business!

While I still love snapping photos of nature in my free time, my heart is now dedicated to capturing my amazing clients and their special memories!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Starting a business from scratch is an adventure on its own—but doing it during a global pandemic? That was a whole new level of challenging! While I had a solid grasp of photography, running a business was completely uncharted territory for me. Thankfully, I had some incredible mentors during my first year who shared so much wisdom and guidance. They helped me navigate the ins and outs of business ownership, get my foot in the door, and connect with amazing clients who truly value my art. I’m forever grateful for their support—it made all the difference!

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in family and high school senior photography, capturing genuine, joyful, and heartfelt moments that reflect each client’s unique personality and story.

I’m best known for creating a fun and relaxed experience, helping even the most camera-shy individuals feel comfortable and confident in front of the lens. Whether it’s a senior celebrating their final year of high school or a family soaking in time together, I strive to make every session feel natural, enjoyable, and full of laughter.

One of the things I’m most proud of is the connections I build with my clients. I love getting to know their stories, interests, and personalities so I can create images that truly reflect who they are. I also put a lot of thought into choosing beautiful locations that match their vision, whether it’s a sunlit field, a vibrant urban backdrop, or a stunning natural landscape.

What sets me apart? I genuinely care about the people I photograph, and my goal is always to create an experience that feels special from start to finish. My clients often tell me they felt like they were just hanging out with a friend rather than posing for photos—and that’s exactly the vibe I aim for! Plus, I take pride in my attention to detail, from posing and lighting to editing in a way that enhances natural beauty without looking overly processed.

At the end of the day, I want my clients to walk away not only with beautiful photos but also with memories of a fun and meaningful experience. It’s an honor to document such important moments, and I wouldn’t trade this job for anything!

How do you think about happiness?
So many things make me happy, but at the top of the list is capturing meaningful moments for my clients. Seeing my clients’ faces light up when I show them previews of the photos during a session or hearing their positive words after they receive their photos and knowing I’ve created something they’ll cherish forever is truly the best feeling!

Beyond photography, I find happiness in the simple things—spending quality time with my husband and our dog, exploring nature, and seeing my favorite music artists in concert. I also love helping and encouraging other photographers, whether through mentorship or sharing tips to help them grow their own businesses.

At the end of the day, what makes me happiest is connection—whether it’s with my clients, loved ones, or fellow creatives. Life is all about the little moments, and I’m so grateful for every single one!
