Today we’d like to introduce you to Krystal Bartizal.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was born and raised in Floodwood MN, I left after High School in 2004 and went to Cosmetology School in St Cloud. I lived in Park Rapids for 5 years and worked at a Full service salon. I then moved to the cities to start a new adventure. I was still doing hair in a few different salons and then I met my husband in 2010 and moved in with him near Hugo MN. We then married in 2014 and bought a house in Stacy MN where I was working in a Salon and he was working for a cable/internet company. There was a building for sale in my home town in 2021 that had a previous salon in it and an apartment upstairs and so we figured this would be a perfect spot for us. I have always wanted my own salon but I didn’t know where it would work, going against so many of them in the cities didn’t seem ideal. I thought the only way it would work would be back in my hometown where my family and friends still lived. We sold our house in Stacy and moved to Floodwood September 2021. I am the only salon within a 30 mile radius, currently I only do hair services (Haircuts, colors, perms, and special occasion) but I am hoping to one day expand and be able to offer Manicures, Pedicures, Facials, and be Full Service.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It has been for the most part, I did decide to change my way of running my business. In the beginning of 2025 I switched to booth rental instead of having employees and that was a bit of a struggle. Although a struggle, it has also been less stress on myself and my husband. Luckily with selling our house in a sellers market we had the means to build the salon and renovate before I opened the doors in October of 2021
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work full time behind the chair doing full hair services, highlights, balayage, full colors, fashion colors, hair cuts, facial waxing and the occasional perm. I am mostly known for my color services, I would say that is 80% of my clientele. I am a Redken Specialist and a Masters of Balayage, I have gotten to meet a lot of Redken Artist in my career and I am lucky for that. When I go to Hair Shows it is nice to see a lot of the big name artists being on the floor with us and being able to meet them. I have met Sam Villa, Brayden Pelletier, Nick Stenson, Siiri Parks, Theresa Van Dam and Bailey Lavender. I try and take a few classes to help with my career and learn new techniques. I am most proud of keeping up with the education that is out there and not staying in one spot with techniques or trends.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I would have to say the easiest way to do this would be social media. I have found so much education and mentoring from fellow stylist, celebrity stylist and Stylist influencers. Networking has also been easy with social media because they are a message or click away instead of having to travel like I did when I first became a stylist. Having a platform on Facebook and Instagram has been basically free advertising for me as well because I can post my work and new customers can see this instantly, I feel you can find your stylist online more now than when I first came into the industry.
