Today we’d like to introduce you to Layne Bender
Hi Layne, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As longtime musicians in the twin cities music scene, a group of us had an idea for a band. When you have a passion for a particular style of music, it’s a labor of love to start from ground zero and develop the idea with people that share the same passion. We knew we wanted to play soul music with a horn section. After endless hours of finding people to commit and rehearse, we approached Karen Palm at the Minnesota Music Cafe in St Paul. She gave us an opportunity in her club to start building our business. We’re now into our twenty eighth year performing there monthly. It’s been a fabulous run and we’re so grateful for her support.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any business, the biggest obstacle can be people. Over the years we’ve had members come and go for various reasons. There were periods we felt it was too much work trying to keep the band together with all the member changes but then you realize if we give up, we’re probably done for good. For the last several years we’ve had the same members and no turnover. The band is consistent every night we play with the greatest group of guys we’ve ever had. We’re having a ball !
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Along with playing saxophone, as an original band member I handle the bookings. Each member of the band contributes to musical ideas, finance, charts, our website and social media platforms. It’s really a team effort that has kept us together for so long. Everybody in the band supports each other. I’m so proud of how we are truly a band of brothers.
Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
As musicians, we get a lot of song ideas for the band from the internet. When it comes to individual practice, there are endless opportunities to learn from great players related to your instrument on YouTube. It’s a great tool.
