Rising Stars: Meet Lulu Ma of Minnesota

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lulu Ma.

Hi Lulu, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Like many other kids, I had always wanted a dog growing up. It took years of asking to convince my parents to visit the shelter, and that’s where I met Cooper. I completely fell in love, and he’s been my best friend ever since.

I have a close friend who was a part of a dog training club, and it was through her that I was first introduced to dog sports and competitions. Since then, Cooper and I have participated in many sports including disc, agility, rally, obedience, and scent work. Between the busier competition seasons, we fill our times by practicing and learning new tricks.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to where we are today has definitely had its share of bumps and roadblocks. Having gotten Cooper when I was only 13, we both had a lot to learn. Being my first dog, I was unsure of where to start. However, I have been fortunately to have wonderful friends and mentors, who have taught me how to navigate these different challenges.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Though we participate in multiple sports, tricks are considered our specialty. We have performed shows and demonstrations at many events, including county and state fairs and shows, as well as performing with the Canine Stars Stunt Dog Show. As of now, Cooper knows over 200 tricks and commands, and is still learning more!

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, outside of academics and studies, I spent much of my time practicing the performing arts. Though I didn’t have many pets growing up, I have always loved animals, and spent a lot of my free time pet-sitting for my friends.
