Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Anderson.
Hi Mark, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I hadn’t given photography much thought outside of capturing my kids until a a marketing client asked about getting some footage of a charity event they are involved in. With a little research, I bought the Cannon T7i. When it arrived, it was a bit intimidating so I turned to YouTube and Social Media groups for some guidance. This is when my love of photography was born. I was amazed by what people were capturing, their techniques and styles. I knew that I wanted to learn more than just the basics. With a little help from web based resources, I am entirely self-taught. I have a “I want to try this” folder on my desktop full of photographic styles and ideas?”. At the rate that I fill the folder I will never stop learning. I still shoot the T7i with various lenses, electronics and have built myself a little home studio to play in. Living in Minnesota and its drastic seasons provide so much to capture that I shoot various subjects without limiting myself to one specific arena. I make it a point to photograph something every day and try new techniques. Positive feedback from family, peers, fellow photographers and the community keeps my desire strong.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been smooth?
As a full-time single Dad, my top priority is the Dad who is 100% committed to the role. Making time for photography, edits, posting on social media, and maintaining my website is second to a full-time job and family. This schedule can often be a challenge in the pursuit of gaining photography revenue. The journey is slow. However, the more I shoot the faster I can set up the camera and achieve quality results of the subject as I see it. Being behind the lens feels natural and is so enjoyable. So I will continue to learn, acquire gear, market myself, and prepare myself for wherever this takes me.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Photography is still more of a hobby than a profession at this time. By day, I work full-time in the automation industry. If I were to put myself in a specialized field, it would be capturing unscripted photos that speak passion or images that highlight the world’s wonders. There is something to be said about the world’s beauty or the connection between one and their love of…., The grace of the horse and rider, the mass destruction of a demolition derby or kids and adults enjoying life and their activities.
Living in a rural area with abundant dirt roads, farms, and wetlands has provided some awesome sunsets, picturesque landscapes, unique plants and flowers, animals, and structures. Much of my work is captured traveling the back roads and attending local events. Macro photography and creative concepts have also made their way into my photography passion.
I am most known as “The Guy who takes pictures of all that makes our town what it is” I often post my work of the local happenings, the features of my hometown, and local events on community social media outlets. I get many compliments, thanks, and appreciation for doing so. It feels good when community members reach out asking if I am going to be here, there, or did I happen to capture this or that.
