Hi Matt, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Showtime Studio has always been a dream. A musician’s playground. Matt (35) has maintained a “portfolio career” as a musician; teaching private piano lessons, gigging, church music and supporting public school music programs. Now, he does all of those things at one location. There is nothing “portfolio” about the work at Showtime Studio. For about 8 years prior to purchasing the building, Matt and Megan had been saving their resources for the idea of a space for creatives. Megan (35) worked as a O.R. Nurse. Her surgical team appreciated her positivity and music playlists during those medical shifts.
Matt needed to consolidate his work to make the difference he felt was needed.
Megan wanted an environment that would support more health education and sharing the power of a healthy lifestyle.
The Bike Shop owner in their neighborhood retired. The building needed updating and therefore was in their budget. They had the cash and the concept was worth going for. The timing was perfect. It had plenty of space to build out and grow into a music hub. It had a large side room that Megan saw herself hanging out and having conversations in this space. A coffee shop came into vision.
Now, Showtime Studio & Coffee is a Debt-Free, Dairy-Free (vegan) and Comlpaint-Free space for connecting people. Music and coffee are just excuses to get together.
These are their values. They are not activists, they choose to simplify their lives to eliminate the issues that most couples and business owners stress about. It works and they will continue this method until it doesn’t.
When you’re feeling good and positive you have more energy to serve your community and see opportunities to make a difference.
If you’re local and doing something- Showtime is available to you at no cost.
Multiple artist are exhibiting their work on a 6 week rotation.
The local breakdancing community is a collection of youth and young adults looking for a space to focus on their training, they use the space for free.
There are multiple jam sessions at Showtime that are well attended. Most other jams in the Twin Cities are in bars, have a cost or are inaccessible based on skill. At Showtime we get everybody making music together, no cost, no booze and family friendly. Weekly Jams include: Blues, Funk, Jazz, Bluegrass, Cajun, Ukulele.
YWAM has worship here, too.
Multiple stages are available at Showtime to accommodate different size performances and audiences. 20 seats in our Coffee Shop, 75 seats in our Main Room.
Young musicians from the area come by for coffee and then find themselves on the performance lineup for that weekend. They come back to hangout and support and meet other local musicians. Matt participates by running the sound and lights and introducing the acts, letting audience members know where to put their tips, while letting them know that audience members are more important than their money, but with those supporting dollars these young musicians will continue to explore their craft.
Paying entertainers was never in our mission. People just started asking to play here. Matt makes them sound good and look good and that is enough to get performers and audiences to return again and again.
Different dance organizations rent the Showtime space for their events and dances. Matt has gotten involved, for the fun of it! The Breakdance Battles have a live Funk Band that Matt plays in. The Tango Milongas have live music that Matt has put together and plays in. Inviting friends from all the different jams. He and a collection of jazz jam musicians perform live for the swing dance events. All to make those experiences better for the organizers and attendees. We like to surprise people!
Bands have formed from our jams.
There is no-cost yoga. Something we thought we’d just try.
As well as Storytelling, Qigong, a monthly Community Grief Ritual.
Dog Walking club every Sunday morning.
Everyone is invited to collaborate with us. We keep things simple and expectations low.
Showtime works because we trust ourselves.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Zoning, parking, all the licenses, contractors, employees, failed events, collaborators that couldn’t follow through, roof leaks, etc.
Keep moving forward. Adjust the method, not the goal. There is a solution to every problem.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
People are most excited about the variety of events we have. Every day is different. Sometimes the coffee shop is the business that has music. Other days it’s a music venue that has a coffee shop.
We just expanded hours. For the first year, we were only open in the mornings. We learned a lot through this period. We just past our one year in July 2025 and celebrated by expanding coffee hours to 6pm everyday. We have built an amazing and enthusiastic team, including 4 baristas that we met as customers or through music. All of them relate to Showtime in more than one way, certainly coffee, but also as a neighbor or musician or curious about our mission.
We’re Dairy-Free because of health and environmental health reasons. Mostly, we just want others to try something new. We’ve had 2 people walk out because we didn’t have milk from a cow. Luckily, there are many coffee shops around the Twin Cities. Not every one will like ours and that is ok.
We know most of our customers by name. It sounds impossible but we’ve found that if you try to remember a bunch of names, you’ll be wrong often and get better at that memory skill. Plus, when people are greeted by name, they know that we see them as people.
Other business owners aren’t around their business. For now, we choose to be visible. Matt’s cell phone number is on the front of the building and he responds to all inquiries.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If you see something, say something. Especially if it’s something that you feel the world needs more of.
