Rising Stars: Meet Neeka Jackson of Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Neeka Jackson

Hi Neeka, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I started my journey in fiber arts in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Before that, I was a full-time DJ living in Miami, FL. When the pandemic hit, it created a lot of uncertainty in the music industry, so I found myself with a lot of extra time and a desire to explore something creative and therapeutic. That’s when I discovered fiber arts and quickly became captivated by the craft.

I began by doing commission work, making pieces that were tailored to clients’ needs, and over time, I honed my skills and learned new techniques. The process of creating with my hands was both challenging and rewarding, offering me an escape from the chaos around me.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I found myself transitioning into a new role as a textile educator. I’m now in my second year teaching tufting, which is a craft I’ve come to love. It’s been amazing to not only continue creating, but also to share my knowledge with others and see the spark of creativity in my students. It’s been a journey of growth, learning, and self-expression, and I’m grateful for how it’s all unfolded.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been smooth, but it’s definitely been a continuous learning experience. One of the biggest challenges I faced early on was not having any financial backing. I had to invest my own money into my craft, purchasing tools, materials, and taking the time to really hone my skills. There were definitely moments of uncertainty—wondering if it would all pay off or if I was making the right choices.

But with each step, I’ve seen my work and my journey blossom. The challenges I faced only strengthened my resolve to keep pushing forward, and now, looking back, I can see how those struggles shaped who I am today as both an artist and educator.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work focuses primarily on tufting, a unique and creative form of textile art that allows me to bring vibrant, tactile designs to life. I specialize in creating tufted wall hangings, rugs, and other textured pieces that merge my love for color, design, and craftsmanship. What I’m most proud of, however, is my role as a teacher. I’ve had the incredible opportunity to share the tufting craft with others, guiding students through the creative process and watching them discover their own artistic voices. There’s nothing quite like seeing someone gain confidence in their work and being a part of that journey.

I’m also really proud of some of the amazing collaborations and partnerships I’ve had. One standout experience was getting to create tufted art inside The Purple Rain House in Minneapolis for an Airbnb Experience. It was an iconic space, and getting to contribute to its artistic legacy was truly a highlight for me.

What sets me apart is my ability to blend my artistic vision with the educational aspect of my craft. I don’t just create; I share the knowledge and the joy of making. Whether through my own work or in the classroom, I’m always looking for ways to connect with others and inspire them through the art of tufting.
