Today we’d like to introduce you to Noah Berghammer.
Hi Noah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in a town just south of Madison, WI, called Janesville. It wasn’t actually a small town by any means, but it kind of felt like it to me because I had these really big dreams. My entire childhood was filled with sports and even though I always pursued my creative passions on the side, it was definitely secondary to my athletic prowess. Throughout high school, I played my own songs at talent shows and wrote in my journal constantly, but didn’t realize that I could do these things for a career until my freshman of college at the University of Minnesota when I suffered an injury that would evidently force me to put baseball on hold and focus on other things. During the spring of 2019, while the rest of my team was on the road for baseball, I was in the piano room at my dorm writing songs. I subsequently spent the summer of 2019 in Minneapolis all by myself so that I could rehab my injury and it turned out to be one of the best things that I could have done. I learned a lot about myself during my alone time and I even wrote a book that is now published. I guess during those down moments when my back was against the wall, was when I leaned on my art the most and discovered that it was something I wanted to do as more than just a hobby. Four years later, I’m now graduated from the U and heading to New York to work in film and tv, while freelancing with music and writing on the side.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
I don’t really believe that the life of an artist can even be smooth per se. There is a huge uphill battle when trying to break into the industry and even when you do, there are many things standing in your way when trying to keep that success or prominence or whatever. For me, I would say that there has been a few pivotal obstacles that I have had to overcome to find my way as an artist. First and foremost, just learning how to make good art that I am proud of. Whether it’s films, music, or books, I had to put in a lot of time and effort to actually make stuff that people would want to consume. After attaining a work ethic, I would say that I had a really tough time learning how to be honest with my art. When I first started making things, I would worry about what people were going to think of me and so, I would try to make things that I thought other people would like as opposed to things that were authentic to me. I made A LOT of really bad stuff trying to people please, but it was such a good lesson for me to learn because it taught me that staying true to myself and my work is paramount if I’m going to have any sort of longevity as an artist.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multi-faceted creative; I specialize as a writer/filmmaker/musician/and entrepreneur, and within each of those spaces, I work on tons of different projects. As a writer, I had my first book published during the summer of 2021. It is called “The Push & Pull” and it is about the transitional period of graduating high school and figuring out what the next chapter of your life will be. It peaked at #12 on Amazon’s Young Adult list and number #396 overall. As a musician, I have released four singles that I have written and either produced or co-produced. They have massed over 100,000 streams across all platforms, respectively. As a filmmaker, I just directed and scored my first short documentary called “Dear Sports,”. It was released in partnership with Gopher Sports and The Big 10 Network, where it has been viewed over 30,000 times in the first week. In addition to my individual artistry, I run a business called “The Community of Creators” which is a networking space for artists and creators from all over the world to come together and collaborate. We make content for social media, host networking events, and have a podcast coming out soon. In addition, we host a series on IGTV where we chat with artists about their experiences in the field. As an artist, I am most proud of my advocacy for other artists. My goal is to change the narrative on how the world views working artists, and give some of the power back to the people making the work that we all consume on a daily basis. One thing that sets me apart is my versatility in being able to create via multiple mediums and also, my optimism that I can achieve all that I want from my art.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If you are an aspiring artist and reading this right now, understand that your dreams are valid; if you put in the time to master your craft and make things that are authentic to you, you can achieve whatever it is you want! I believe in you.
