Rising Stars: Meet Sabrina Peitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Peitz.

Hi Sabrina, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I have been an artist since I learned how to use a pencil. I grew up trying out all the different mediums of art, I was always curious. When I got older, I started combining my art with my identity through painting and materials. In college, I studied Graphic Design because I knew it was the best way for me to combine passion with profession. Being a person of color in a space where no one looked like me for most of my life, talking about my identity and other underrepresented identities felt like a natural thing for me to do in my work. It was a way for me to not only better understand myself, but also celebrate others and teach a little along the way. So I got out of school and started my first job, I knew I needed to find a way to bring that part of myself into my profession. I volunteered to work on internal projects celebrating Black History Month, Pride, etc. The more I talked about celebrating people the more I started finding others equally passionate about it. That lead me to meet Houston White a local entrepreneur who celebrates people and cultural collision in everything he does. He asked if I would like to be a part of the Get Down Coffee Co team as the creative. I’ve been creating for him ever since alongside working on projects within my agency celebrating people in any way I can! When I’m not doing that work I also love collaborating with other local black creatives who are passionate about people as well!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road for me. Mid-way through my college experience my advisor said I should consider a different career because at the time I was struggling through a steep learning curve using the different programs and had a less than great mid-program review. Had I listened I’d never met all the great people who have molded me in my career. So, I took that as a challenge. I also had a really hard time getting a job when I first entered the industry, as a student it feels like you’re supposed to have it figured out before you’re even done with school, well I did not. Luckily after some months I found a great job!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Graphic Design and overall creative. I do everything from Experiential design work to photoshoot direction, print/digital design and even a little video editing. The further I get into my career the more my work surrounds around celebrating underrepresented people, education through design and exploration around identity. I think the type of work I focus on is what sets me apart. I don’t want to only create something beautiful, I want it to mean something to people. I want people who don’t feel represented to feel like the story I told was meant for them. That said, I am most proud of the journey I’ve taken to get to this place to be able to tell these stories.

We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
I’m a pretty open book, but I’d say most people wouldn’t know that I started solo traveling at the age of 8. My dad lives in California, so I’ve been traveling by myself for years!

We could not be more proud of Sabrina. She continues to not only represent her community, she’s also a role model for her siblings.
