Rising Stars: Meet Sarah Bosben of Maple Grove, MN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sarah Bosben.

Hi Sarah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I never thought I would be an entrepreneur, but I feel so blessed and proud of myself that I started this business! I was a primary teacher 13 years before staying home full time with my third baby during Covid. As she got a little older, I started thinking about what was next for me career-wise. I looked into some different options and nothing brought me excitement, until I stumbled upon permanent jewelry and got my first piece.

I love jewelry and love helping people look and feel their best. I researched many training companies online and decided to train with Linked Permanent Jewelry. I watched hours and hours of training videos, read articles, and learned all the specifics for welding. I practiced and practiced, felt frustrated while making many mistakes, but finally started feeling more confident and proficient.

Once I felt like I had the knowledge and skill to actually weld jewelry, things moved quickly! My friends and I came up with the name, I started an LLC, ordered chains I thought would be popular, created a social media page, and the rest is history! I feel very lucky to have such a wonderful support system that helped me gain the confidence to bring this idea to fruition.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Overall, it has been relatively smooth. There were definitely moments in the beginning of this journey where I thought- “what have I gotten myself into? I can’t do this. What makes me think I can start a business?” It was much more difficult to learn to weld and put the jewelry on than it looked like it would be while watching other people do it. I felt overwhelmed and like I would never be good enough. There are so many different variables to welding that I had to figure out. It is very finicky and you have to figure out your system and what works for you, so I think that was the most challenging part.

I think another challenging part for me was learning new technology- from using social media to creating a website, etc. Luckily I have some very smart and encouraging people in my life that I leaned on when I needed help. There are also many resources online (permanent jewelry groups) that helped me make decisions for my business, and Canva has been extremely helpful. Learning and utilizing these technologies has helped me continue to grow my business.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Permanent jewelry is a clasp-free accessory welded together for a chic and effortless addition to your everyday style. I am dedicated to providing exceptional 14K gold-filled and sterling silver selections that are customized into bracelets, anklets, and necklaces.

I have a huge selection of chains and people have commented on the uniqueness of my inventory. Typically, permanent jewelry is pretty dainty, and while I have a large amount of dainty chains, I do have some chunkier chains that set me apart from others. In addition, my pricing is competitive and as affordable as possible. I strive to keep my pricing low enough so that it’s more accessible for everyone.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
This is such a good question and hard to answer! I think good luck, bad luck, timing, and hard work have all played an important role in my life and business. When I think about pivotal moments in the last 5 years that have led me to starting this business, it has been a combination of bad luck and good luck. Looking back, it all happened for a reason and exactly as it should have, even thought it didn’t feel fair at the time.

When I was pregnant with my third child, I had pre-term labor complications that forced me to go on bed rest to take a leave from my teaching career. It was one of the scariest and most unknown time of my life. I wasn’t sure if my baby would survive, what I was going to do for work, or what the future looked like. It felt like I had been given a huge dose of bad luck.

The good luck came in this situation over time with a healthy baby, and a career change for my husband that allowed me to stay home permanently. His career change happened with hard work, but the timing was divine.

Fast forward, if that hadn’t had happened, I would never have taken the plunge to stay at home with my kids. I would never have left the career that I had worked so hard to build. Everything happens for a reason! Now I have the flexibility to do permanent jewelry when it works for me and my family. It allows me to help provide for my family financially while still being available for all the things my kids need. It is the perfect path for me and my life right now.
