Rising Stars: Meet Sofia Mifsud

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Mifsud.

Hi Sofia, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Malta, which is a little island in the Mediterranean. I was fascinated with storytelling of all kinds from a very young age, and took to reading and writing early on. Over the years of my young adulthood, I wrote and read voraciously, and eventually picked up a camera because I really yearned to be able to tell visual stories, as well as written ones. I went to school to study still and moving image, and moved to the USA four years ago with my partner. I now am delighted to call Minnesota my home, and have already met and collaborated and worked with so many beautiful and creative people here. It is only the beginning.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I have had many people who told me that I would not be able to accomplish what I wanted to do, or insinuated that what I dreamed of was somehow absurd. I also struggle a lot with my mental health. If it weren’t for my therapist, and my healthcare team, then I don’t think I would be able to do half of what I do. You tend to receive a lot of doubts from others when you are trying to do something on your own and outwardly suffer from things like depression and anxiety. I have had to learn the hard way that I only require my own belief in myself, and nobody else’s.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I identify as a woman, and a teenage girl morphed me into what I will loosely call a ‘raging feminist’. My stories of all kinds addressed themes surrounding feminism, human rights and equality fairly early on. My writing and photography and film is how I have always channeled my severe emotions, which have been plenty. Some of my work is born of anger, others fatigue, and others still of utmost joy. I tell stories about what it feels like to be human, as strange and confusing as that constantly is.

I also enjoy addressing these themes using mythology, fantasy and tales of the occult. I find channeling age-old genres in order to tell a story brings me a lot of joy and empowers me as an artist and creative. You will find no greater example of misunderstood and misrepresented women and minorities than in the oldest tales. I like to channel these characters into my present.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Reading A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens out loud over and over again as the sun set through the kitchen window, and imagining I was in the book.
