Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Meder.
Hi Sydney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I taught myself how to sew as a young girl, using the materials from my late grandmother’s sewing chest. This connection inspired the name of my studio, Avis Bridal. Since Avis is also my middle name, it all beautifully comes together.
My love for weddings started very young as well. I was constantly sifting through wedding magazines and dreamed of being a wedding planner. I could feel it in my core that I belonged somewhere in the wedding industry.
As I grew, I dedicated a lot of time to mastering the basics of sewing and garment construction, learning through countless mistakes. I also gained experience by working at various bridal stores and venues, immersing myself in the industry as much as possible.
Surprisingly, the business I run today came about somewhat unexpectedly. I had no immediate plans to pursue a career in the wedding sector; as I was still exploring which path to take and was a stay-at-home mom, so I didn’t focus much on it. However, when a friend of a friend reached out urgently for a hem on a dress needed that weekend, I hesitated but ultimately decided to help. Before I knew it, my phone was buzzing with messages from others seeking alterations.
Working from home for a while allowed me the time to contemplate the direction I wanted my career to take. After experiencing countless emotional moments with brides as I helped them achieve the perfect fit for their dream dresses, I realized that I wanted to be part of the dress journey from start to finish.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The path of entrepreneurship has certainly had its ups and downs, but it hasn’t been overwhelmingly challenging either. As a sole entrepreneur offering my services, I pour my heart and soul into every piece I create or alter. When mistakes occur, they can feel quite impactful. However, sharing those heartwarming moments with my clients and their loved ones makes it all worthwhile!
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a seamstress who specializes in alterations for wedding gowns, suits, and other formal wear. What brings me the greatest joy is showing my children that their dreams are entirely achievable.
I truly value the connections I create with my clients, following their life journeys—from altering a prom dress to preparing for their weddings and all the cherished moments in between.
It’s often said that a seamstress becomes part of the family, and I aim to foster that same warm atmosphere. I want my clients to feel as if they are stepping into my living room when they visit my studio, rather than experiencing the cold, stark white aesthetics typically found in other bridal shops.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Weddings get bigger every year! I am noticing more often brides are choosing two gowns – one for the ceremony and one for the reception.
I anticipate that grooms may follow this trend in a few years!
