Rising Stars: Meet Tasha Harris of Minneapolis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tasha Harris.

Hi Tasha, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Kobi Co. was born out of a moment of pause during one of the most chaotic times in recent history. In 2020, at the height of the pandemic, my daughter Kobi Gregory and I (Tasha Harris) were looking for ways to create calm, connection, and joy in the middle of distance learning and constant uncertainty. What began as a self-care ritual—pouring candles, pairing them with curated playlists, and creating little moments of peace—quickly resonated with friends and family.

What started at our kitchen table grew into a true calling. I left my 28-year corporate finance career to build Kobi Co. with Kobi, blending her youthful creativity with my business experience. Over time, our candles became more than just products; they became soulful experiences rooted in scent, sound, and self-care.

We’ve since opened a brick-and-mortar store in downtown Minneapolis, launched wellness-centered candle-making workshops, and introduced corporate gifting experiences. Along the way, we’ve been honored to collaborate with brands like Target, Four Seasons, Capella, and The W Hotel, and we’ve given back by providing scholarships to BIPOC women and donating to families impacted by violence.

Today, Kobi Co. is known as “the ultimate intersection of scent, sound, and self-care.” Every step of the journey has been about more than just growth—it’s about creating moments that remind people to slow down, breathe, and honor themselves.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road—but it’s been a meaningful one. Like many small businesses, especially those led by women of color, we’ve had to build with limited resources while wearing all the hats—creatives, marketers, fulfillment, customer service, you name it.

We launched in the middle of a global pandemic, during a time when supply chains were unreliable, emotions were high, and everything felt uncertain. There were moments we doubted ourselves—navigating growth while homeschooling, working side-by-side as mother and daughter, and learning the ropes of entrepreneurship in real-time.

One of the biggest challenges has been scaling while staying true to our mission. We didn’t want to just sell candles—we wanted to create experiences rooted in wellness, culture, and care. That meant we had to learn how to say no to opportunities that didn’t align, and yes to slower, more intentional growth.

There have also been moments of burnout—especially as a small team running a brick-and-mortar, events, e-commerce, and workshops. But through it all, we’ve stayed grounded in our why. Every challenge has made us more resilient, more creative, and more committed to building a business that reflects our values and brings real peace into people’s lives.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Kobi Co. is a luxury candle and wellness brand that lives at the ultimate intersection of scent, sound, and self-care. We hand-pour small-batch candles in our Minneapolis studio and pair each one with a curated playlist, turning a simple moment of lighting a candle into a full sensory ritual.

But we’re more than just a candle company—we’re experience curators. We specialize in immersive self-care workshops, custom corporate gifting, and curated wellness events that invite people to slow down and reconnect with themselves. Our offerings include candle-making classes, sugar scrub workshops, and exclusive seasonal subscription boxes that deliver intentionality to your doorstep.

What sets us apart? We center vibe as a form of healing. Every product we create is infused with care, culture, and creativity. Our brand is deeply rooted in Black joy, rest, and emotional wellness, and we build everything with intention—from our scent blends and music pairings to the affirmations and rituals that come with each experience.

We’re most proud of building a brand that doesn’t just sell products—it creates sacred space for people to feel seen, soothed, and inspired. We’ve collaborated with major companies like Target, The W Hotel, Capella, and the Four Seasons, but our heart is still in the moments when a customer tells us, “Your candle helped me exhale today.”

To us, Kobi Co. is a love letter to those who pour into everyone else and are finally learning to pour into themselves. Whether you visit our downtown store, attend a wellness workshop, or light a candle at home, you’re stepping into a ritual of peace and presence.
