Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyler Herwig
Hi Tyler, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Music has always been a part of my life. I started playing as a teenager, just for fun, but in college, I was told I could never make it a full-time career and support a family. That pushed me toward a more ‘practical’ path in healthcare, but my heart was never in it. I fell into the wrong crowd, and my lack of passion led to depression. I tried to numb it with drugs and alcohol, which turned into a battle with addiction that lasted for years.
Five years ago, I got sober, and everything changed. I found my way back to music—not just as a passion but as a career. Since then, I’ve been able to do what I love full-time, marry the love of my life, and become a father to two incredible kids. They, along with my music, are my driving force. I truly believe my journey—both the struggles and the victories—have shaped who I am today and the artist I’ve become.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road has been anything but smooth. Overcoming addiction was a huge part of my journey, but even after getting sober, the challenges didn’t stop.
One of the hardest things was convincing people that music wasn’t just a dream—it was a real career. Outside of my wife, most people didn’t see it as a viable path. If she hadn’t pushed me to go all in, I’m not sure I ever would have.
Another challenge was rebuilding my reputation. In my addiction, I burned bridges and lost opportunities, and getting people to see me for who I am now—not who I was then—took time. I had to prove, through my actions, that I was serious about my music, my sobriety, and the life I was building.
It hasn’t been easy, but every struggle has made this journey even more meaningful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a full-time touring musician, and I write and record all my own music as an independent artist. Not working with a label has its challenges, but it also gives me complete creative freedom to tell my story the way I want to. A lot of my music comes from personal experiences—especially the highs and lows of my journey with addiction and recovery.
What sets me apart as an artist is the raw emotion I bring to every performance. I’ve been told I have a natural talent, but the real gift is in the storytelling—making people not just hear the music, but feel it. That’s what I’m most proud of: connecting with people in a way that makes them feel seen and understood.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the people who have supported me along the way. My producer, The Legacy Beats, is incredibly talented at bringing my musical visions to life, and I’m grateful to work with someone who truly understands my sound. The worship team at my church has also played a big role, always giving me honest and thoughtful feedback on my music and writing.
My parents have been my backbone, especially through my journey with addiction and sobriety. But the biggest credit goes to my wife, Maegan. When we first got married, she was the one who pushed me to take music from a well-paid hobby to a full-time career. Without her, I wouldn’t have taken that leap. And now, our kids are my biggest motivation—not just to provide for them, but to show them that no matter how unconventional your passion may seem, you can turn it into a career.
