Today we’d like to introduce you to Wendy Nielsen.
Hi Wendy, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I grew up taking pictures and was always the friend in the group with the camera. I took black-and-white film photography classes in high school and wanted to be a fashion photographer. I went to school in the 90s so it was highly recommended to not go to college for an arts degree so I unfortunately chose healthcare instead. 🙂
I began photographing weddings with a friend in 2011. I joined a CrossFit gym in 2013 and began photographing there that same year, and became hooked on sports photography from that experience.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Photography has not been a smooth road. It is difficult to be a photographer and photo editor full-time, especially when you have a “day job.” I have to pay the bills. I pursue as many sports photography jobs as I can to increase my reach and expand my portfolio.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am mainly a CrossFit and volleyball photographer. I played volleyball from 4th grade all through the beginning of college, so I understand the movement patterns and the game very well. My husband and I have season tickets to the Minnesota Gopher volleyball team (since 2010) so I have kept up with the game and all of the changes. I also do CrossFit so this helps photograph that sport, too. I believe it’s imperative to truly know a sport to photograph it well. I am known for my photo socks that I wear every time I shoot. 🙂
I am most proud of being a contractor for CrossFit LLC since 2017. I love the people who have moved through that Media Team so much. It’s such a cool group since people have worked on the team from all over the world.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
My girlfriends are my biggest supporters and cheerleaders. They are always pushing me to keep going.
