We recently had the chance to connect with Melissa Poley and have shared our conversation below.
Melissa, it’s always a pleasure to learn from you and your journey. Let’s start with a bit of a warmup: When was the last time you felt true joy?
Right now as I’m responding to these questions! It’s an honor to be interviewed for a second time! But in all seriousness, I feel joy every single day because I CHOOSE to. Joy can be found in every situation (yes, even in the hard and painful ones). When you feel like it’s challenging to find joy, then you look for the blessing or lesson. Finding the blessing/lesson in every situation activates gratitude which then raises your frequency and transforms frustration and anger into love.
Joy, love, and happiness is always available to you. You just have to choose it.
Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hi, my name is Melissa Poley! I’ve been an Esthetician for 23 years and own Serendipity Spa in Clive, IA. I am so proud of what Serendipity has transformed into over the past 13 years. The spa brings together multiple businesses in one singular space, but we are all mind, body, and soul focused so the healing that happens here is just incredible.
Right now, I am also working on receiving my Transformational Leadership Coaching certification from Encompass Life. I’ve had a few major life changes that actually sparked all of this. Within the past two years, I got a divorce and my Mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body Dementia at the age of 70. Between navigating divorce, my mom’s disease, and moving her into a memory care facility, I knew I required support in healing and improving my self worth. That’s when I started Encompass Life classes. Since then, I’m learning to shift my perspective on life to find the blessings and love within each situation. After a little over a year of doing this work, I’ve noticed as I begin to change, everything in my life is also changing for the better. I realized how important this work truly is and I feel compelled to continue learning so I can share it with the world.
Great, so let’s dive into your journey a bit more. Who saw you clearly before you could see yourself?
Truthfully, God saw me before I could see myself. God creates all of us in love. You can think of it like we are all snowflakes! Every single snowflake is unique and different, and just like snowflakes, each of us have special gifts to share.
When we are children, we are curious, joyous, playful, gifted, and full of love. As we grow up and experience life, we create stories around what has happened to us. Those stories create specific filters that serve as our viewpoint on life. These stories and filters make it more challenging to experience life to its fullest – similar to what’s felt as a child.
As I continue down this journey and fully embracing being my own unique snowflake, I’m beginning to find the patterns that limit me and I’m actively rewriting my own narratives to find the blessings.
Was there ever a time you almost gave up?
Yes. I was six months into my divorce when a co-worker got upset with me and chose to share a very personal story I told them in confidence.
That choice created a lash back that drove me to thoughts of not wanting to be alive. I’m very grateful for my friends and families support at that time as they helped me get through those darker days. I sat in my shame and fear to face the truth for about three months until I started to find me again. I took it one day at a time and slowly began to find the joy and blessings within the pain.
During this period, I got an email from Encompass Life asking if I would like to be interviewed for their podcast. At the time, I was skeptical, yet my inner guidance was saying yes. I continued with the interview and thank God I did because it led me to classes that continue to change my relationship with life.
Alright, so if you are open to it, let’s explore some philosophical questions that touch on your values and worldview. How do you differentiate between fads and real foundational shifts?
A fad is something that’s short lived and has yet to get to the root cause. Fads will keep you disconnected from who you really are and always in comparison with someone else.
A real foundational shift will change the frequency in your body and begin to heal. As you create the feeling in your body that you are already in this new space (whether it’s financially, emotionally, or physically), that feeling will change your body chemistry and create new neuropathways in your brain . As you change, your world around you changes.
In my opinion, there will always be a new fad to latch onto, but true foundational shifts will help you remember who you really are and your authentic gifts.
Thank you so much for all of your openness so far. Maybe we can close with a future oriented question. What is the story you hope people tell about you when you’re gone?
I desire to be remembered by the way I chose to inspire and empower people to see the light at the end of the tunnel, find love and gratitude even when it’s hard, and remember all of the unique gifts this life has to offer.
