Story & Lesson Highlights with Meredith McCowan of Saint Paul

We’re looking forward to introducing you to Meredith McCowan. Check out our conversation below.

Hi Meredith, thank you so much for taking time out of your busy day to share your story, experiences and insights with our readers. Let’s jump right in with an interesting one: What are you being called to do now, that you may have been afraid of before?
I have been feeling called to put myself out there on the public stage a bit more! Until very recently, I was terrified of speaking in public. It’s a fear I can’t explain using logic. My body and voice used to shake uncontrollably whenever I had to speak in front of people. In the past, I would agonize for weeks in advance if I knew I had a public speaking engagement coming up. Over time and with practice, I got better at speaking confidently and my voice no longer shakes! My strongest gift will always be connecting one-on-one, but I’m extremely grateful for the opportunities I’ve been presented with to share knowledge with more people.

Can you briefly introduce yourself and share what makes you or your brand unique?
Hello! My name is Meredith McCowan and I am the owner of Earthling Astrology. I launched my astrology practice in 2017 after four years of intense study.

As a child, I excelled at science and was obsessed with the night sky, planets and stars! I read every book possible about outer space and the solar system. As a young adult, I started out my undergraduate education as a science major. I later switched to psychology which I now don’t think is a coincidence! Astrology is a mix of not only science and astronomy, but psychology and mythology as well.

Before I launched my astrology practice, I worked for almost 17 years in patent technology. This high stress, fast-paced career environment taught me immeasurable skills to be able to run my own business.

I typically work with a birth chart, which can also be called a horoscope. A birth chart is simply a snapshot of the sky at the moment you took your first breath. I consider a birth chart something like a ‘divine blueprint.’ It is a fantastic tool to bring clarity, self-awareness and compassion to yourself and other individuals.

When I pull a chart for a client, it’s like someone turns a key in my mind and I get a data stream of information about them. I can make advanced calculations very quickly when looking at a birth chart. Intuition is also involved in reading a chart and this piece probably took me the longest to get comfortable with.

When I first started out doing this work, I did not expect to be able to do it full time! However, the Universe had other plans for me. Within two years of starting my astrology practice, I ended up leaving my long career in intellectual property. I read for only a handful of clients a month when I first started out. Currently, I’m booked out more than five months which is the best ‘worst’ problem to have in business! I’ve also been blessed to be asked to be a special guest on numerous TV shows, radio shows and podcasts.

I love my work which doesn’t feel like work at all! I help as many people as I can find their calling, purpose and passions. Astrology is a great way to re-discover your gifts, talents and ambitions that may have been forgotten due to your life circumstances. I highly recommend learning about your own chart or finding someone who can help you interpret it, as it’s a complicated craft. However, it is not for everyone and I respect everyone’s decision to find their own way to get to know themselves on a deeper level.

Amazing, so let’s take a moment to go back in time. What relationship most shaped how you see yourself?
Oh, this is absolutely the relationship I have with my husband! We have two very different views of the world, or perhaps we used to.

My husband is a very talented musician who never fit into mainstream education systems. He was never able to find a fulfilling job. I used to be very judgmental of these things! He self-taught himself to play every instrument that he plays. He surpassed my 7 years of childhood piano lessons in just two weeks! He is a private self-employed drum instructor and that is actually how we met. It was he who showed me that you could make a career out of doing something that you love! When we met, this was such a foreign concept for me.

In my relationship with him, he reflected back to me how much ‘programming’ I was running on. While I had a successful career, I was also constantly stressed and drinking way too much alcohol. I didn’t realize how much rationalizing I was doing! I now see clearly that working hard, being productive and bringing home big paychecks were not things that were truly making me happy. He reflected back the ‘shadow’ parts of myself that needed to be brought to light. Even though my own husband doesn’t ‘believe’ in astrology, he was a catalyst for me to become who I am today!

What have been the defining wounds of your life—and how have you healed them?
This is a raw question! My wounds revolve around the topics of deceit and betrayal, which I think is very common for a lot of people. I can honestly say I am still in the healing process, but I can report on what has helped and is currently helping me.

First, if someone deceives or betrays, I always try and remember it is more a reflection of their character and not a reflection of my worth or value as a person. I hold the idea that everyone is doing their absolute best at their level of consciousness.

Second, I reflect on if I was deceiving myself in any way. Was my intuition pinging me and I ignored it? Was I silencing my own authenticity or truth to please another person’s ego? Was I over-analyzing, rationalizing and thinking too much and muting my heart’s messages? I try and take responsibility for my role in being deceived by admitting I may have been deceiving myself in some way.

Third, I seek out help from professionals or my trusted inner circle. I appreciate difficult conversations, holding space for healing, and receiving supportive energy from others. I also use astrology (of course), meditation, journaling and time in nature to help heal and forgive.

Lastly, and this is probably where I am now, I try to confront my fear of being deceived and betrayed. The reality is that it will probably happen again. The emotions around this are incredibly intense for me. But, I know that I will be OK! I am accepting that is a part of the human experience. I do my best to stay loving and not become the very thing that hurt me. It is a journey!

I think our readers would appreciate hearing more about your values and what you think matters in life and career, etc. So our next question is along those lines. What’s a belief or project you’re committed to, no matter how long it takes?
I am personally committed to ‘scientific’ research around astrology! I have a background in science and approach astrology through that lens.

Science is defined as “the systematic study of the structure and behavior of the physical and natural world through observation, experimentation, and the testing of theories against the evidence obtained.” Well, astrology can be thrown into that mix for sure! Through observation and evidence, I study behaviors, notice patterns and analyze data. I haven’t gotten too far yet, but someday maybe I’ll have a team of researchers helping me!

The only ‘official’ personal study I’ve conducted around astrology is regarding the phenomenon of déjà vu. I had a theory that I wanted to test (science!). I proposed that Pisces was the most common zodiac sign to experience déjà vu. Well, the results of my study gave me evidence that my theory was incorrect! My survey indicated that Gemini was the most common Sun sign to experience déjà vu. I received a lot of interesting data in my déjà vu research study, but I’ll keep it concise for this interview.

I have many more research ideas. I plan to spend my time on Earth studying astrology using the scientific method as much as possible! It’s a tough and highly ridiculed endeavor, but I am definitely ALL IN regarding my commitment to research. I am currently studying the physical disease of cancer using astrology. This research has been slow going, but I have so much ambition to try and help people live healthy and joyous lives.
.

Okay, we’ve made it essentially to the end. One last question before you go. If you laid down your name, role, and possessions—what would remain?
I’ve been thinking about this question a lot! I have spent a lot of time in my past worrying about losing things whether it be a job, a relationship or a physical thing (house, car etc). I have to remember that I came into this world with nothing but my body. If I happen to lose everything – my career, my house, my relationship, I would still have my integrity. I would still have my inner spark. I would still have my breath. I would still be the master of myself. I have been working on non-attachment and it has brought me a lot of inner peace.
